Travel Guide: Big Sur

Travel Guide: Big Sur

Never have I been somewhere that so clearly speaks to the beauty of contrast. She is wild & unforgiving, yet delicate & beautiful. Gentle meadow flowers line harrowing cliffs that drop straight to the ocean below. Crystal clear blue water shimmers gently in the sun and then crashes against the shoreline. Nestled amongst the redwoods that give way to the Pacific, Big Sur most certainly has magic floating in the air.

Make the drive yourself via scenic Hwy 1. Hairpin turns along the rocky California coastline may make your heart skip a beat or two, but the views are unparalleled and not to be missed. We pulled off at just about every overlook. Internet and cell service are sparse in this wild landscape and it made me love the area all the more. If you’re looking to disconnect from the consuming busyness of life and reconnect with the rugged, still beauty of nature, Big Sur is for you.

as you arrive

"Big Sur" by The Thrills. Conveniently titled and perfectly captures the laid back vibe of Big Sur.

Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. This lodge is so special and truly one of my favorites I have stayed in. This historic Inn is made up of several cabins right off Hwy 1. You must call to make reservations and the staff are helpful in finding the right room or cabin for you. Each room is complete with a stovetop fireplace and the coziest bed you may ever sleep in.

McWay Falls. You’ve probably seen this scenic spot on Instagram many of times, but seeing it in person really does leave an impact. Complete with a tiny waterfall that falls into aqua waters. Time your visit early in the morning and you'll have the space all to yourself.

Pfeiffer Beach. A simply stunning beach. Massive cliffs hang along the water’s edge and break with an almost perfect door-like shape looking out into the ocean. Perfect to pack a picnic for and watch sunset at.

Deetjen’s Restaurant. Not only a lovely place to stay, but an incredible place to eat. The restaurant has a quiet romance to it; filled with antiques, old photographs and candles slowly burning. We ate here for dinner and had to come back from breakfast the next morning. Sourced with local & organic produce, you can taste the love that goes into the food. Make sure to order the blueberry pancakes for breakfast, they are the size of the plate and delicious.

Big Sur Bakery. Fluffy croissants and delicious brews. Also, they sell amazing locally made pottery.

thank you for reading.
